Ayurveda has used Shallaki extensively in the treatment of painful joint diseases and other inflammatory conditions.
Shallaki is an effective remedy to control the symptoms of arthritis-like pain because of its Vata balancing nature and thus reduces the pain and improve the function of joints. It may help with inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and asthma.
Boswellia serrata is a plant that produces Indian frankincense. It is also known as Indian oli-banum, Salai guggul, and Sallaki in Sanskrit. The plant is native to much of India and the Punjab region that extends into Pakistan.
Effects
Boswellia serrata is likely safe for most adults. Boswellia serrata extract has been used safely in doses up to 1000 mg daily for up to 6 months. It usually doesn't cause major side effects. But some people have reported stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, and itching.
If you have gastritis or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), you may not be able to take boswellia. Two case reports describe dangerously elevated INR (a test used to measure blood clotting) in people who were taking warfarin (Coumadin), a type of drug often referred to as a "blood thinner".

Curcumin (Turmeric) in combination with boswellic acid is more effective. Combining Curcuma longa and Boswellia serrata increases the efficacy of Osteoarthritis treatment presumably due to synergistic effects of curcumin and boswellic acid.
